In the course of a week we learned about media, sexism, and gender oppressions. Young people from all over Chicago went out of their community norms to think outside the box. While bonding with each other, we learned to work together and deconstruct media. Deconstructing the media means being aware that there is both positive and negative views. This blog will be a voice of discussion around sexism in media. Sexism is discrimination or devaluation based on a person's sex. Our original action was a gorilla tactic that involved sticking stickers on ads that were demeaning towards women or men but due to imprisonment charges we decided to try something else, this was our alternative.
L.I.A Biographies:
My name is Chris Williams. I attend Urban Prep Academy East Garfield Park. I am 15 years. I became involved in Chicago Freedom School in the summer of 2010, through the help of my counselor. I'm passionate about architecture. I have always wanted to be an architect. I started drawing when I was little and as I got older I realized what an architect was and I knew I wanted to be one. Then I started drawing buildings I wanted to create, but also build. Hopefully one day I can pursue this career.
My name is Asucena Lopez. I attend Social Justice High School. I am 17 years old. I am a 2009 and current Chicago Freedom fellow. My passion is fighting any any oppression that affects the world. Not being informed is a crime that we get punished for. Being packed with knowledge is my own personalize choice.
My name is Dulse Delgado. I am 17 years old. I'm a 2010 Freedom Fellow. My passion is fighting for equality and informing everyone I know about oppression. I hate when people act blind and don't see what is right in front of their faces.
My name is Brian Damacio. I attend Social Justice High School. I am 17 years old. I became involved with the Chicago Freedom School this year in the summer, through the help of my friend. My passion is becoming a teacher for 3-6 grade. I've always wanted to teach when I was small, and still want to today. I want to replace some of the teachers in communities that aren't as passionate as others to get young minds far in life. In my life I've seen some teachers that just go to work just for a check, but they don't really care if the students make it in life. I want to help change this. (:
